Today a little puppy went into surgery to try and fix a leg that a single puppy injury changed forever.
Nemo is a young Labrador who should be running, playing, and growing up without pain. Instead, today he underwent major orthopaedic surgery in an effort to correct a serious issue in his leg.
When Nemo was younger he suffered a growth plate injury, something that can happen in a split second during normal puppy play. Unfortunately, as he continued to grow, the damaged growth plate caused his leg to develop incorrectly and begin turning outward.
What started as a small injury has now developed into a significant orthopaedic problem affecting how he stands and walks.
Without surgical intervention, Nemo would likely face ongoing pain, worsening limb deformity, and long-term mobility issues.
Today Nemo underwent a corrective osteotomy performed by specialist surgeon Ben Mielke.
This procedure involves surgically cutting and realigning the bone so his leg can grow and function more normally. It is a complex surgery, but it gives Nemo the best possible chance at living a comfortable and active life.
Unfortunately, orthopaedic surgery and specialist care come with very significant costs. Nemo originally came into our care because his previous owners were unable to take on the financial commitment required for the treatment he needs. Sadly, there are also very few rescues or individuals able to take on dogs requiring complex medical care.
That is how Nemo ended up with us.
This fundraiser is to help cover Nemo’s initial surgery and hospital costs. Unfortunately, depending on how his leg heals as he grows, he may still require further imaging such as CT scans and potentially additional corrective surgery in the future.
We will be covering all of Nemo’s rehabilitation, physiotherapy, and around-the-clock care here at Canine Flow, ensuring he has the best possible chance at recovery. His hydrotherapy, strengthening work, and post-operative support will all be managed through the centre.
At the moment our priority is simple — making sure Nemo is comfortable, pain-free, and given every opportunity to recover.
Depending on his long-term prognosis and ongoing care needs, Nemo may eventually be available for adoption once he has recovered. For now, he is safe, loved, and receiving the care he deserves.
If you are able to contribute toward Nemo’s surgery or share his story, we would be incredibly grateful.
Every bit of support helps give this sweet puppy the chance at the pain-free life every dog deserves.
