Urgent assistance is needed to repair fences and a wall at Randwick Stables. An integral paddock fence has come down and the sheep have wrecked a wall of the house. We desperately need your support to buy materials to fix the stables.
We are asking for support for basic repairs to fences and the house itself. The labour of construction is being donated by people within the community (you can join us too!). We just need help to buy materials.
The heritage listed Randwick Stables in Hamilton Hill is an incredible community asset. Since 1923 the local stables has been a hub for families to come and spend time with horses and other animals. In recent years the space has grown to include a blacksmith, local furniture restoration, other animals including sheep and a baby pig. Randwick has also hosted many events, including hugely successful open days that have attracted thousands of people to celebrate our heritage and community spaces.
Since 1999 the Stables has been cared for by Alison and Ted, who have lived there. Both of them have worked tirelessly for free for these last 25 years maintaining the property and allowing people to share in this wonderful place. However, in recent years the maintenance and upkeep of the house and Stables has gotten harder and harder. Now with Ted moving away, Alison is struggling to maintain the stables by herself.
Alison has been a stalwart protector for local environment and heritage, successfully listing the stables and south beach on the heritage list, as well as spending twenty years advocating for the protection of the Hamilton Hill Swamp Precinct (the open space adjacent to the stables), a culturally and environmentally significant site that is now an Aboriginal heritage area.
These community spaces are sadly very rare these days. Somewhere for children and adults to come and spend time with animals in a free and welcoming space while also protecting and valuing our heritage is something very special that must be cherished and protected.
Please help us to maintain and repair Randwick Stables so that many future generations can enjoy it.
