On May 2nd, my mom woke up with pain so intense that she was unable to get out of bed or move her head. She was taken to the emergency room at the local hospital where she was told that she has two vertebrates in her neck that severely deteriorated and are collapsing on the disk and would require neurosurgery to fix. The following week, she was transported by ambulance to Greeley Colorado, admitted and met with the neurosurgery team there. At that point, she would need to have surgery and a cage built on c-6, and arthritis and bone spurs removed from c-3 to c-7, and that even a simple fall could result in paralysis. The surgery was scheduled for June 16th, and she was told to apply for financial assistance through Banner Health, as she didn’t have insurance and the cost of the surgery was estimated to be close to $309,000. She applied for financial aid and was approved due to being on medical leave from work, spoke with the hospital in Greeley and assured that everything was good to go for the surgery. She arrived at the hospital in Greeley on June 16th at 5:30 am and after two hours the hospital cancelled the surgery due to not having insurance. Greeley then suggested scheduling the surgery through the neurosurgeon in Casper, because the financial aid was applied for in Wyoming. She meets with the neurosurgeon again on July 24th. At this point, she has exhausted all resources, and is needing support to cover her bills during the month of August, as she will be able to go back to work once the surgery is completed.
