Hi everyone,
This isn’t something I ever thought I’d have to do, but I’ve reached a point where I’ve exhausted every avenue I know of and am at my wits’ end.
I’ve been out of work since January due to a condition called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) that has caused severe, chronic pain in my shoulder, arm, and neck. I underwent surgery in July, hoping it would finally bring relief, but unfortunately, it didn’t help. I’m still living with constant pain that makes it hard to do even simple things—let alone return to work. There are days when I can barely lift my arm, and most days, I can’t feel my fingers on my right side, which makes it hard to even grasp objects.
My paid medical leave ended in June, and my unemployment is still pending (it’s been pending for four months now) with no approval or denial in sight. Now, with the government shutdown and no clear answers or path forward, I don’t know what to do. I’ve called unemployment regularly, submitted all documentation, and even written letters to my local representatives as recommended. I’ve been applying to jobs regularly with no luck! I’ve been doing everything I can to stay afloat: selling books, making handmade items (when I can use both hands), and cutting back on every possible expense.
I’m also continuing to apply for jobs (that require less arm/shoulder work) and work with unemployment while staying hopeful that if my arm improves, I’ll be able to return to work at both the chiropractic office and maybe even Coffee Milano—two places that truly feel like home to me. Even with all that, I’ve fallen behind on rent, utilities, food, and medical bills. I’m terrified of being evicted and losing my home.
I am, by nature, a giver and a caretaker. Asking for help is the last thing I ever thought I’d have to do, and it’s not something I’ve ever been comfortable with. I’ve always tried to help others and push through the hardest of times. I’ve always found a way—but this time, with the pain I’m in and the uncertainty around my health, it’s hard to find a job I can do reliably while my doctors are still searching for answers.
Asking for help for myself is incredibly difficult and humbling, but I’m learning that sometimes strength means letting others in.
If you’re able to help in any way—by donating, sharing this, or even just sending encouragement—it would mean the world to me and my two sons. I’m also looking for resources or advice anyone has to offer, as any guidance could make a big difference.
To those who’ve already reached out or helped me in any way—thank you. Your support and kindness have meant so much and have reminded me I’m not alone in this.
Every bit helps us breathe a little easier and gives me hope that I can get through this and heal without losing everything I’ve worked so hard for.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read this and for any kindness you can offer.
With gratitude,
Nedrah
