Hi - My name is Alan Pulverness, an English language education consultant based in Norwich, UK and I’d like to introduce you to Nedaa Ismail Almadhoun, a Palestinian teacher of English from Gaza City.

Here Nedaa describes her situation far more eloquently than I ever could do on her behalf:

“My name is Nedaa , and I’m with my husband Maher and our little girl, Joud. Every single day in Gaza is a fight for survival. We struggle to find enough food to eat — many days, we go to bed hungry, trying to comfort our daughter with empty promises. It’s nearly impossible to find clean water to drink, and we spend hours searching for it. Cooking is also a daily challenge because there’s no gas and barely any wood left.

The constant fear from airstrikes, sleepless nights, and the pain of seeing our daughter suffer has left us feeling helpless. Every bit of support will help us get food, water, water. Additionally, we are faced with the task of rebuilding parts of our home that have been damaged or destroyed.

I wanted to share some thoughts about my daughter and the profound changes we have witnessed in her life since the onset of the war.

Before the war, she was a carefree child who spent her days playing with her toys, going to school, sleeping soundly at night, and enjoying healthy meals. Those moments of innocence and joy now seem like a distant memory.

However, since the situation has changed, I have seen her transform in ways I never anticipated. Instead of playing, she now participates in gathering wood and lighting fires for cooking, ensuring that we have something warm to eat. It breaks my heart to witness this shift; she takes on responsibilities that a child should never have to bear, all to stave off hunger and hardship.

These circumstances have stripped away her childhood, replacing it with the weight of survival. Despite her resilience, I can't help but worry about the impact of these experiences on her developing mind and spirit.

I hope for a brighter future where she can return to the joys of childhood, free from the burdens of war.
