Two weeks ago, our family experienced a sudden and life-changing medical emergency. My nephew, Nathan, suffered multiple blood clots in both of his legs and was rushed to the emergency room. Doctors quickly discovered there were no pulses in his feet, and he was taken into emergency surgery that lasted over four hours.
During this surgery, doctors removed the clots and performed a double fasciotomy. This is a critical, limb-saving procedure used to relieve dangerous pressure caused by swelling and to restore blood flow to muscles and nerves. Due to the severity of his condition, his wounds were left open for two days and later closed during a second surgery. Nathan now has two long incisions on both sides of each calf, and at this time, he is unable to use his legs.
Nathan spent eleven days total in the hospital. He was finally discharged and has been transferred to an inpatient acute rehabilitation facility. While we are incredibly grateful for how far he has already come, there are still many unknowns, how long rehabilitation will take, how much recovery can happen with inpatient rehab, and what life will look like once he returns home.
In addition, doctors have determined that he will need to remain on blood thinners for the rest of his life, as they do not yet know why his blood clotted. This brings ongoing medical costs and lifestyle adjustments that were completely unexpected.
Nathan just turned 25. He is a self-employed drywaller who works hard to support himself, and because of this medical crisis, he is currently unable to work or earn any income. Nathan has worked hard his entire life. He is an absolute go-getter and has never been one to ask for help. As you can imagine, this is an incredibly humbling process for him. His attitude remains positive and he is willing to put in the hard work that it is going to take to regain the use of his legs.
Nathan loves working on cars, attending car shows with his dad, cooking great meals in the kitchen and loves traveling. He entered this year hopeful and motivated for his future.
Though this journey was not one we anticipated, we firmly believe that our God is a healing God and that He is able to fully restore Nathan.
We know that healing often comes through many avenues, prayer, medical care, rehabilitation, time, and the support of others.
We are asking for prayers for Nathan’s strength, peace, and complete healing, and for wisdom and endurance for his medical team and family.
We are also asking for support to help cover medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, lost income, and the many ongoing needs that come with such a serious and uncertain recovery.
We trust God’s plan, even when we cannot yet see the full picture. Thank you for praying for Nathan, supporting our family, and walking alongside us during this journey. Every prayer, share, and donation is deeply appreciated.
