Help Nathan and Judy Bring Grand daughter Home

Dear Family, Friends and Acquaintances,

Thank you for taking the time to read this!  This may be the most important piece I have written in my life.  I won't be able to share all the details that I'd like to, but I will make sure you understand before I'm done.

My parents, Nathan and Judy Greene are in a battle for custody of their granddaughter! Their granddaughter is a minor and will remain nameless here.

Mom and Dad's granddaughter was abused by her biological father when she was very young. He was charged with felony battery to a minor.  That charge was dropped to a misdemeanor by taking a few classes and completing a year of probation.

Fast forward several years.  He wrote a letter to my sister, stating that he no longer wanted to visit his daughter.  So, for four years he had zero contact with her! No phone calls, no birthday cards, no birthday or Christmas gifts, no letters, nothing from him.  For four years!

Sadly, at the end of September 2020, my sister Melissa passed away leaving behind two daughters; her 12 year old and a toddler.  My parents have essentially been the caretaker and provider for their granddaughter for 12 years.  My sister battled with Multiple Sclerosis, which made raising a child very challenging for her.  My mom and dad were a constant source of support to my sister and niece.

Within days of my sister's passing the biological father decided he wanted his daughter back, "because of all she's been through", even though he voluntarily submitted a letter stating he no longer wanted visitation with her.  This brings us to where we are now.

Like many other states, Indiana family laws are antiquated.  Not only are my parents fighting to keep their granddaughter, they are also fighting these antiquated state laws.  They are prepared to go the the highest court in the land.  They are in this position because of a recent mediation between them and the biological father.  Unfortunately, they were given the option,  agree with this or risk losing her altogether if you take this to court.  My mom and dad were devastated with the news that they might lose their granddaughter forever.  A little side note, this fight is happening because my parents promised their granddaughter that they would.  My niece has said, she knows no other home than where she is;  in Indiana with her grandparents.  This mediation agreement, sends their granddaughter to live with her biological father at the end of this month and gives my parents visitation rights, that of a divorced spouse.  This is simply not good enough!

Dad and mom searched for an attorney that would take on this fight! My mom and dad are humble people and didn't want to ask for help.  They have already spent 1/4 of the presented goal in attorney fees.  This was for the mediation process and then to retain the new attorney.  I firmly believe there are many people who are more than happy to contribute to this fund! These funds will be used for attorney fees. If these funds are not needed, they will be applied to a college fund for their granddaughter.

We pray this has to go no further than a district court near Indianapolis.   But if it does, I want them to be prepared!

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Sincerely,

The Greene Family
