Dear Family and Friends,
It takes a lot out of me to be able to write about this in a public forum. In December 2017, my mom Nathalie was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). With symptoms appearing in the Autumn of 2015, the last three years have been tumultuous, filled with numerous challenges and difficulties.
A single-mom and a widow, my mom raised me all by herself and is all the family that I have left. She has been a fighter her entire life. With the help of her friends and extended family, my mom has been taking on the challenges with persistent determination. I wish that our love alone could help her overcome this debilitating condition, but it won't, and we need to ask for your help.
Last year, a new treatment for ALS was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The drug known as Radicava is the first new drug approved for ALS treatment in over 22 years. Researchers have shown the drug to reduce the disease’s rate of progression by 33%.
In Canada, the drug is currently under review by Health Canada and is not covered by OHIP. As a result, it has to be imported. The drug's list price is $1,000 per infusion, which amounts to nearly $150,000 a year for treatment, according to the ALS Association.
Given the prohibitive cost of treatment, we would appreciate all the help we could get to cover some of the medical expenses. If you can and it’s in you to give, my mom and I will be forever grateful. Your support and prayers would mean so much to her.
Thank you for taking the time to read my mom's story.
