My name is Natalie, and I’m a single mother living in Southern California. Since my son was born, I’ve been running my own small business, working hard to support us both. My son is going to be 8 in July, and he’s disabled, which makes stability and routine especially important for our family.
Recently, I learned that our Section 8 housing assistance is being terminated at the end of May because I missed an appointment. I made the mistake of not checking my mail, and while I was expecting a call or email as usual, it didn’t come. I’ve always abided by the rules since I first received housing assistance in 2022, and I never imagined that a simple oversight could put our home at risk. Now, I have only a short window to sign a new lease and start paying the full rent on my own, which I’m not prepared for. I’m filing a reasonable accommodation to try and keep our housing, but with Memorial Day approaching, it’s a waiting game.
Without assistance, our rent and bills are much higher than what I’ve been able to manage while growing my business. I’ll need to cut into my savings for a car, and I’m planning to take on a second job as soon as possible. My son loves his school, and I want him to finish out the school year where he’s at, since change is especially hard for him. I’m asking for help to cover our rent and bills over the next few months while I navigate this huge jump in costs and work to build a more stable future for us. Any support or sharing of this fundraiser will mean so much to our family during this urgent transition.
