In December 2023, Natalie Zukofski and her fiancé Alex Lay-Calvert began building their future in Asheville, North Carolina. Natalie moving to Asheville to become physician assistant student at South College, while Alex established himself as a software developer. Together, they worked hard to create a new life in Asheville, quickly growing to love the city they called home.
Hurricane Helene brought devastation no one could have anticipated. The sudden collapse of the Lake Lure dam triggered catastrophic flooding throughout Asheville. Residents, including Natalie and Alex, were blindsided as the floodwaters surged through homes and streets. Given little time to react, they were trapped in their apartment complex, seeking shelter with our friends Lauren and Kyle as the waters QUICKLY rose. This was as unexpected as it was traumatic.
The damage to their apartment was extensive and heartbreaking. The entire space was flooded, leaving nothing salvageable. Their furniture, technology, and all their belongings were completely destroyed. Irreplaceable items now lost forever. In addition to everything else, Natalie and Alex also have two dogs, a Great Dane and a Pitbull, who now need new supplies and space, adding to the overwhelming stress of their situation.
Natalie and Alex are now faced with the overwhelming task of rebuilding their lives from the ground up. Natalie, who had been preparing to return to PA school after our 2 week fall break, and Alex are grappling with the trauma of losing their home and all they had worked for.
Any support you can provide during this incredibly difficult time would make a world of difference in helping them recover from this tragic loss and begin the long process of starting over.
Thank you SO much.
