Hello world! My name is Krystal and I love animals. I have since I was a little girl. Why is this all important to point out right away? Because this fundraiser is for one of our precious fur babies….
Nanook is a 4-year-old Alaskan malamute/shepherd/lab mix. In other words, he’s pretty much a mutt. And a very healthy and energetic doggo at that! He is very much loved by the whole family! On November 4th, Nanook decided to take a stroll over our 4-foot fence. On his way back into the yard, he popped both the radius and ulna out of the elbow joint on his front right leg.
Today he had an appointment to see what would be recommended. We drove an hour away to find a reasonably priced vet. They used anesthesia to get X-rays and see what was going on. The vet was truly amazing! She offered to call in their retired vet to see if he would be able to reset the bone. He came in and they tried. Unfortunately, with minimal movement once it was set, it popped out. So we discussed our possible options and who may be able to do the surgery. She called around and found a local vet who would be able to do the surgery.
His options were as follows:
1) Try another reduction to reset the bone and joint. However, muscle and tissues may not be strong enough and may end up doing something else… $1200
2) Reduction with screws… $3000
3) Amputation of the front right leg… $1500
With the possibility of ending up back at these choices again in the future with options 1 and 2, I have chosen to go with option 3. Keep in mind the cost listed is just a rough estimate for what we have been quoted going forward. We are already at $500 spent for his one appointment and then there are also my lost wages for needing to leave for this appointment. If my son could have it his way, he would want to keep the leg. And I don’t blame him! A GoFundMe is one of my last options. I have asked the bank for a loan and was told no. CareCredit is maxed out at a rather low limit and not eligible for an increase.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Any excess after the vet is paid will be donated to a local pet charity.
UPDATE::: 11/12/2025- Nanook is such a champ! He is making it around without that front leg like it’s no big deal. He is on daily pain meds to help alleviate any pain he may be having. Currently surgery is planned for November 18 with a morning dropoff. Just under a week left to raise more funds! I appreciate all the help to this point and also going forward!
UPDATE:: 11-19-25….surgery went well and we received many compliments on how well behaved Nanook had been thru his stay….no barking, howling, attitude. I brought him home today and it’s definitely a struggle for him to adapt but he is trying and doing so well! Will still be trying to raise funds to help cover the excess(surgery was more than original quote). With that being said, I chose my doggos well being over other bills. The continued support is very much appreciated!!
