Hello, my name is Katia Pronina, and I am launching this campaign to help our close friend, Larisa Makeeva, during one of the most difficult times of her life.

On November 8, Larisa went up to the attic of her home to check for a possible roof leak. While carefully walking along the beams, she lost her balance and fell through the thin drywall ceiling, landing hard on the floor below. She couldn’t move, and emergency responders rushed her to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she spent four days.

Larisa has spent the last 20 years working as a nanny and teacher for many families in Houston. She has always loved caring for children and gave her whole heart to the families she supported. Unfortunately, this kind of work doesn’t pay much, and she has no savings to fall back on during a crisis like this. Additionally, Larisa does not currently have medical insurance. She had maintained coverage for many years, but due to a significant drop in her income over the last couple of years, she could no longer afford it.

Her injuries are extensive — she suffered multiple fractures in her lumbar and thoracic spine, pelvis, and shoulder. She was discharged in a wheelchair and now faces a long and painful road to recovery.

Right now, she needs full-time care. She would normally require a 24/7 nurse, but thankfully her daughter is able to live with her during this time and help. However, this means her daughter cannot work while caring for Larisa, adding to the family’s financial strain.

Here are Larisa’s estimated immediate expenses:

Hospital bills (4 days at Memorial Hermann): ~$20,000+

Medications & medical equipment: ~$850

Rehabilitation, nursing care, and loss of income: ~$7,400

Total estimated need: $28,250
