On the early morning of April 20, our lead singer, Nanibaah, was driving back from Flagstaff, AZ at 5 a.m. after dropping off our other band member, Ken, at the train station. Nanibaah fell asleep turning off the I-17 coming into Cordes Junction. She ran into a semi on the off-ramp, completely totaling her car. We are incredibly grateful she is stable and is doing okay. The semi driver is also fine. She was given a ticket and she came back to Arcosanti around 6 a.m. to rest.
She had played a paid gig at Arcosanti the night before. She is a singer/composer/chef/baker/braider whose professional networks extend from California to Texas. As a self-employed, self-made entrepreneur, she is constantly on the road for work. Her most recent gigs were opening for Kent Monkman at the Denver Art Museum and an all POC music festival called Darkosanti.
Between music shows, she is a chef/baker who does sales on the Oodham reservation. She also takes care of her niece part-time when her older sister is working her full-time job. Nanibaah also has a braiding business with clientele from around the entire Southwest.
Nanibaah's transportation allows her to be a self-employed entrepreneur, a babysitter to her niece, and an involved community member.
All of us in her band, Earth Surface People, are incredibly thankful she is okay. As musicians, we make enough just to get by. So we are asking our communities to come together to fund 11k for her totaled car.
