In Nani’s words, after a year of struggling to find a doctor who would listen to me, I suffered a myasthenic crisis leaving me in the ICU intubated. This disease causes weakness and rapid fatigue of muscles under voluntary control and does not have a cure. I am here asking for financial help for ongoing medical expenses since I am physically unable to move on a daily basis. I will be undergoing surgery to remove my thyroid gland February 15th and hopefully relieve some of my symptoms. Although it is not a 100% cure I hope this surgery will help me get my life back on track.

En palabras de Nani, después de un año de luchar por encontrar un médico que me escuchara, sufrí una crisis miasténica que me dejó intubada en la UCI. Esta enfermedad causa debilidad y fatiga rápida de los músculos bajo control voluntario y no tiene cura. Estoy aquí pidiendo asistencia financiera para cubrir mis gastos médicos por qué no tengo la habilidad física de moverme diariamente. Por ahora me operarán la glándula de tiroides el 15 de Febrero con la esperanza de aliviar algunos de mis síntomas. Aunque no sera una cura 100% espero que esta cirugía me ayude a recuperar mi estado de vida previo.

BACKGROUND EXPLANATION:

Dani (nicknamed Nani) was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis in 2023, a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects neuromuscular abilities. It’s unknown how it develops/manifests and there is no cure. Thankfully there are treatments and medications that help people regain muscular strength and mobility. In 2022 Nani began showing odd symptoms including a droopy face. In 2023 she sporadically fainted three times and on one of those falls chipped a tooth. She would often lose strength in her legs and was unable to walk or even lift her head for many weeks. She was seen by various emergency room doctors and had multiple comprehensive lab tests, CT scans, x-rays to figure out what was going on. Each time they sent her home stating there wasn’t anything serious happening. Nobody asked the right questions except her primary doctor who thankfully diagnosed her in August 2023. This condition came with a lot of medical (including E.R.) bills and unanswered questions.

Unfortunately in the fall of 2023 she went into myasthenic crisis, an acute respiratory failure that requires intensive care. Basically her diaphragm muscle and trachea stopped functioning. The worst case scenario of this disorder became her reality. On that morning she was unable to breathe properly. She was gasping for air and started choking after attempting to take her medication to subside her symptoms. She was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital. It’s such a rare disorder that there was little staff on hand that understood how to treat her condition. They decided the best course of action was to intubate her and provide mechanical ventilation. They also helped her gain strength with the use of IVIG. She was airlifted to a hospital that had the proper ICU staff and knowledge on her condition. Upon transfer they provided her the care she needed with the ultimate goal of removing the breathing assistance. Nani is a real fighter. Thanks to her and the many specialists including a neurologist she was able to start breathing on her own. She left the ICU in November 2023. As of today she requires long term medication treatments and physical therapy to help her with full body mobility, fight infections and overall avoid another myasthenic crisis. We recognize there are many more hurdles in her future which is why we have decided to ask for help. Thank you all for your support.

Dani (apodada Nani) la diagnosticaron con miastenia gravis en 2023, un trastorno autoinmune crónico que afecta las capacidades neuromusculares. Se desconoce cómo se desarrolla/manifesta y no existe cura. Afortunadamente existen tratamientos y medicamentos que ayudan a las personas a recuperar la fuerza muscular y la movilidad. En 2022, Nani comenzó a mostrar síntomas extraños, por ejemplo un rostro caído. En 2023 se desmayó esporádicamente tres veces y en una de esas caídas se quebro un diente. A menudo perdía fuerza en las piernas y no podía caminar ni siquiera levantar la cabeza durante muchas semanas. Fue atendida por varios médicos de la sala de emergencias y le hicieron múltiples pruebas de laboratorio, tomografías computarizadas y radiografías para determinar qué estaba pasando. Cada vez la enviaron a casa diciendo que no pasaba nada grave. Nadie hizo las preguntas correctas, excepto su médico de cabecera, quien afortunadamente la diagnosticó en agosto de 2023. Esta afección vino acompañada de muchas facturas médicas (incluso la sala de emergencias) y preguntas sin respuesta.

Lamentablemente, en el otoño de 2023 entró en una crisis miasténica, una insuficiencia respiratoria aguda que requiere cuidados intensivos. Básicamente, su músculo diafragma y su tráquea dejaron de funcionar. El peor escenario de este trastorno se convirtió en su realidad. Esa mañana no pudo respirar adecuadamente. Estaba jadeando por aire y comenzó a ahogarse después de intentar tomar su medicamento para aliviar sus síntomas. La llevaron inmediatamente al hospital más cercano. Es un trastorno tan raro que había poco personal disponible que supiera cómo tratar su afección. Decidieron que el mejor curso de acción era intubarla y proporcionarle ventilación mecánica. También la ayudaron a ganar fuerza con el uso de IVIG. La trasladaron en avión a un hospital que contaba con el personal de UCI adecuado y conocimiento sobre su condición. Tras el traslado le brindaron la atención que necesitaba con el objetivo final de retirarle la asistencia respiratoria. Nani es una verdadera luchadora. Gracias a ella y a muchos especialistas, incluido un neurólogo, pudo empezar a respirar por sí sola. Dejó la UCI en noviembre de 2023. A partir de hoy requiere tratamientos con medicamentos a largo plazo y fisioterapia para ayudarla con la movilidad de todo el cuerpo, combatir infecciones y, en general, evitar otra crisis miasténica. Reconocemos que hay muchos más obstáculos en su futuro y por eso hemos decidido pedir ayuda. Gracias a todos por su apoyo.
