Help Nancy & Kyndal Make History at Nationals!
Donation protected
We are proud to share that two outstanding students from Memphis Rise Academy — Nancy Ortiz (Class of 2026) and Kyndal East (Class of 2027) — have earned a spot at the National History Day (NHD) Competition held this June at the University of Maryland in College Park!
On April 5th, Nancy and Kyndal impressed judges at the Tennessee History Day state competition with their powerful and thoughtful historical website : “Carrying the Burden: Labor Rights and Civic Responsibilities in the Memphis Sanitation Strike.” Their project earned second place in the statewide contest, along with two selective special awards from the Society of Tennessee Archivists and the Tennessee Historical Records Advisory Board. These accolades follow a first place win at the West Tennessee regional competition two months prior.
Their hard work, research, and dedication have opened the door to compete at the national level from June 8–12, where they’ll present their project in front of top historians, educators, and students from across the country — all tied to this year’s NHD theme, “Rights and Responsibilities.”
Why We Need Your Help
To make this opportunity a reality, we’re raising funds to support travel and lodging for Nancy, Kyndal, and a chaperone.
We’re asking for your support to help cover:
- Airfare and transportation
- Hotel accommodations
Why It Matters
Since Memphis Rise launched its History Day program in 2016, our students have consistently earned recognition for outstanding research and creativity in exhibits, documentaries, websites, and performances. Nancy and Kyndal are part of this proud legacy — and will be our fourth group to reach the national stage.
By donating, you’re not just helping fund a trip — you’re investing in two brilliant young women and the power of student voices in history.
Every Dollar Counts
Whether it's $10, $50, or more, every contribution helps bring Nancy and Kyndal one step closer to the national competition. If you’re unable to donate, please consider sharing this page with friends, family, and anyone who believes in uplifting student achievement.
Thank you so much for your support — let’s help these amazing students make history!
