Help Nancy have intraocular lens implantation
Donation protected
Hi everyone, Nancy was born with cataracts in both eyes which have required many operations, daily contact lens wear and eye drops to treat raised intraocular pressure. Nancy had her natural lenses removed when she was a few weeks old. The diagnoses of this condition is called Bilateral congenital cataract, bilateral cataract extraction, bilateral aphakia.
Although Nancy has done well with daily challenges, learning to take out and put in her own contact lenses at the age of just 3, her vision is very reduced and limits Nancy to what she can or cannot do.
Nancy is now 11 and starting secondary school this year. We want to be able to give Nancy the vision she deserves so she no longer misses out on activities and doesn’t have the added struggle with her academic learning.
Nancy has had all her previous treatment at the Southampton General Hospital Eye Unit. We were always told she might be able to have the lens implantation however it’s not necessary suitable for everyone. With Nancys specific case it would be secondary - meaning that the lens implementation would be done as a separate procedure from the initial cataract removal. Almost any eye surgeon will have experience of primary lens implantation in older patients, but there will be subtle differences with Nancys case and her age.
We are fundraising to try and raise money to cover the cost of Nancy to have this procedure done with a private specialist who has experience with children with complex eye conditions. We are very aware this procedure is complex, rare and will require the consultant to weigh up how high risk it would be for Nancy to have.
The estimate cost could be up to £20,000, we are aiming to raise at least half of this to start the next chapter.
At the beginning of this journey we organised a skydive and raised an incredible £3,600 that went to the Eye unit at Southampton General Hospital. If we were unsuccessful with Nancy having this procedure done, all money raised would go to this fantastic charity again.
Nancy wants to get involved with this fundraising and she will be planning some cake sales and other activities to help raise as much money as she can.
Thank you for reading and for all your support,
Nancys family x
