Today is Nagila's birthday, and for her birthday I wanted to set up something special for her. Anyone who knows Nagila Alencar knows that she is a hard worker. They know that she’s been in this country for twelve years. They know that she started those twelve years as a pre-undergraduate (English program), and that she is still currently an undergraduate, even though she's graduated with two bachelors degrees and two associates degrees. They know that she is adamant about doing things the right way in this country. They know that she has suffered greatly trying to DO things the right way. They know that she has been pushed down, beat down, and thrown down over and over again in her quest to simply obtain a job like any normal legal resident of this country. They know that she has had to continue to pay for schooling, rent, immigration fees and lawyers (a literally never ending cycle for her) in order to stay in this country legally, all while making minimum wage.
Nagila was recently told by her lawyer that she'll only have hope of getting a normal work visa and stop going to school if she has a masters degree. Or if she moves to Canada. Both are going to take more money that she can physically produce with the one and only body that she has been given. Let's help her. Please. This is more than any one of us who love her can give, but together, we can help her finally end this cycle of perpetual-student, and finally have a real job, a real and stable home, and a way to support herself like any person wants to. She has been through so much, and yet she somehow finds the strength to keep going, to support not only herself, but family at home. Happy birthday. Nagila. We love you and we want to show it!!
