I've been working for years as a journalist in Haiti and my fixer, guide, translator and friend is Richard Miguel, who works several small jobs and whose major work is for journalists when they're in Haiti, which is not often.
His wife is Nadine, and they have a ten year old daughter, Khloe, who can be seen in the picture with her mom.
A few years ago, Nadine developed a benign tumor in her jaw that required surgery, and RIchard managed to get together a bunch of doctors to perform it, pretty much pro bono.
But now the tumor has returned and is more aggressive and larger. It will require more complicated and extensive surgery in Haiti's neighbor, the Dominican Republic, as well as reconstructive surgery after the tumor and part of the jaw is removed.
The surgery needs to be done as soon as possible before the tumor further destroy's Nadine's jaw and her teeth. She'll need to travel to the D.R., which she has done before, and she'll need the funding to stay pre- and post-op and to pay all her doctors.
Having the funds to do this procedure will allow Nadine to continue her productive life in Haiti's restaurant business, where she has worked as an administrator and a server. It will permit her to keep making money to help support her daughter's schooling.
Without the surgery, Nadine will be—at best—seriously disfigured and will require support and care as the tumor continues to eat away the entire jaw, and perhaps more of the bottom structure of her face.
This is a beautiful, responsible, and loving mother who deserves a chance to continue leading a full life and the possibility of seeing her daughter grow into adulthood.
