Quick Summary:
Ukrainian refugee Nadia is out of work, out of savings, and desperately trying to support her elderly parents, brother, and young niece—still trapped in war-torn Ukraine. This fundraiser helps provide for them and for Nadia, covering food, rent, medical care, English lessons, and immigration costs, so she can survive in Canada and continue supporting her loved ones under fire.
Nadia Escaped the War. Her Family Didn’t
Nadia fled Ukraine over two years ago, escaping the devastation of war. She came to Canada hoping to find safety and start over—but instead found herself isolated, injured, and overwhelmed. She has no savings, no job, and no way to support the family she left behind.
This campaign is to help Nadia stabilize her life here and support the people she loves most—her elderly parents, her brother, and his daughter—who are still facing daily terror and hardship in Ukraine.
Her Family’s Struggles in Ukraine
Nadia’s parents, married for over 50 years, have been confined to their apartment since the invasion began. Both suffer from serious health conditions and limited mobility, making them especially vulnerable as shelling continues around them.
Family Living Under Fire
Nadia’s brother is doing everything he can to provide for his family while rockets and drones terrorize their region daily. His 11-year-old daughter—Nadia’s niece—has become emotionally withdrawn and can’t attend school regularly due to trauma. The family is emotionally and financially stretched to the breaking point.
Nadia’s Fight to Start Over in Canada
After arriving in Canada, Nadia worked in quality assurance and later took a cashier job at Safeway. Without public transit or a driver’s license, she walked long distances to survive. But chronic wrist pain eventually forced her to stop working.
Now, she’s studying English and applying for a work permit extension in hopes of making Canada her permanent home. But her immigration status expires soon, and without income or savings, she’s at risk of losing everything.
A Larger Crisis
The group photo in this campaign shows Nadia alongside others who fled the war and are now trying to rebuild their lives in British Columbia. While this fundraiser focuses on supporting Nadia and her family, the need within this community is far greater.
Nadia’s childhood best friend, Xania, also escaped Ukraine just before Russian forces massacred civilians in Bucha. Though she survived, she too is struggling to afford basic expenses here in Canada. If this campaign is successful, I’m committed to continuing fundraising efforts to help as many war-displaced families as possible.
