After Years of Giving, I’m Asking for Help to Begin Again
Hi friends, community, and kind strangers,
My name is Myles Smutney—artist, curator, and founder of The Free Store Project, a mutual aid and public art initiative that, for the past several years, provided care, clothing, food, and connection to thousands of New Yorkers.
For a long time, I poured everything I had—emotionally, creatively, and financially—into keeping The Free Store alive. What started as one small kiosk built from found wood and filled with care turned into a citywide network of free-standing mutual aid hubs. Together—with the help of 200+ volunteers—we shared thousands of items, thousands of moments, and an endless amount of hope. Beacons in the form of free-standing sharing kiosks, which we repaired through countless storms and seasons, to keep resources flowing to those in need.
The Free Store was a love letter to New York City. A protest. A prayer. A practical act of care. The project was built with love and sacrifice.
Now, after many long and difficult years of service, I’m at a turning point.
The structures are gone. The need remains. And I’m turning that care inward—for the first time in a long time. The Free Store is over. And I’m beginning again.
I’m in a period of life transition—emotionally, creatively, financially—and I need support to get over the hurdle. After years of prioritizing community, I’m finally trying to take care of myself: to rest, to rebuild, and to create a future that’s sustainable.
I’m seeking to raise funds to stabilize my living situation, cover essential Free Store web costs, and create space to begin again.
Why I’m Asking
This is a moment of honesty and healing. I’ve hit a wall. I’ve spent years surviving—and helping others survive—and now I’m trying to recover and regroup. Like so many artists and organizers, I gave until I was empty. And now I need help refilling the well.
How You Can Help
Donate if you’re able—every bit helps me catch my breath
Share this campaign with others who believe in community care
Hold space—your encouragement means the world
This isn’t just about money. It’s about building a culture where people who give are allowed to receive—without shame, without explanation. I’m so grateful for everything The Free Store gave me, and now I’m grateful to simply ask for help, just as I am.
Thank you for showing up. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for believing in something strange and beautiful and free.
