I am 31 years old, and my journey as a mother has been filled with both joy and heartbreak. At 18, I adopted a baby girl who was my ex-husband’s sister’s child. For 12 years, she was a cherished part of our family, and I always encouraged her to stay connected with her biological relatives. Three years ago, she decided she wanted to live with her biological mom. Wanting her happiness, I let her go, but it devastated us. Despite promises, we haven’t seen her since, and the loss has left a deep void in our hearts.
I have been with my current husband for nine years, married for four, and together we have two boys. Our oldest is 12, and I adopted him after his biological mother passed away when he was three. My husband is his biological father. We also have a son together, but my pregnancy was complicated by bilateral carpal tunnel, hypertension, hyperemesis, and preeclampsia. This led to a c-section and a hysterectomy, though thankfully my ovaries were preserved. After grieving the loss of our daughter and healing as a family, we want to welcome another child into our lives through surrogacy. Both my husband and I hope for a biological child, so we don’t have to worry about our child feeling torn between families again.
Our insurance covers much of the IVF process, but we still face significant out-of-pocket costs. We also need to pay for health insurance and compensation for the surrogate, legal fees for both parties, and mental and health evaluations.
