Funds will be used to pay hospital bills and bills that overdue.
My wife and son were healthy all throughout the pregnancy. We entered the hospital a week past her due date, feeling hopeful and joyous about welcoming our new son. The day and night were long, and through the night, my son’s heart rate kept dropping. I kept bringing it up to the staff, but they reassured us it was normal and just repositioned my wife. This continued all night. When it was finally time for her to start pushing, I felt a sense of hope that I would soon meet my son. But an hour into the process, his heart rate dropped dangerously low. My wife was quickly taken to the emergency OR, but instead of an immediate C-section, she was asked to keep pushing. By the time they decided to do the emergency C-section, my son was already in the birth canal and had to be rerouted through the incision. I was in the operating room when my son came out completely blue and gray, not breathing. The team worked to resuscitate him while my wife drifted in and out of consciousness beside me. They finally got my son breathing, but he never cried. He was rushed to the NICU, and a team from Texas Children’s Hospital arrived to transfer him for a cooling procedure to help with possible brain damage from HIE.
My wife endured three surgeries in nine days: an emergency C-section, a DNC, and a hysterectomy. She is recovering, but still has significant swelling in her legs and feet, and is in pain from a large lateral incision. My son remains in the NICU, learning to take a bottle without choking, and is being monitored for a brain clot. His heart issues have been corrected, but he is still being weaned off seizure medication and will undergo a 24-hour EEG. We are still living in the hospital—my wife in the women’s pavilion and my son in the West Tower of Texas Children’s. I am going back and forth to care for both of them. It’s incredibly hard to see the two loves of my life fighting for survival, while also facing the weight of overwhelming medical bills. I’m sharing our story in hopes that some people may be able to help us with these bills. Thank you and may God bless you all.
