Charles Mertz brain cancer fight. Memorial Fund

Donation protected

Hi Friends,

It's with a Heavy  Heart that we are asking for your help for my son-in-law Charles Mertz. He is one of the most loving, most giving guys I know. He is always willing to help anyone with anything, he would give the shirt off his back to help someone out.

On August 1, 2021 Charles was on his way home from a run to Seattle Washington. He began to feel a tingle in his calf and as he exited the highway to stop at a truck stop the feeling intensified and his whole leg began to shake it then slowly moved up the left side of his body he stopped the truck and got out, the whole episode  last about 5 mins. He called an ambulance and the paramedics cleared him to drive as they suspected it may have been a spasm due to poor circulation from the long hours on the road. He then continued home, when he got home he felt that something may still be wrong and thought that maybe he had a type of stroke so to rule it out he went to the ER.
When he arrived at the ER they told him his blood pressure was high and that they needed to run tests to see if what he had was a stroke. As he and my Daughter sat awaiting test results Little did we know our whole life was about to be turned upside down and inside out.
The doctor came in with the Devastating news that what he had experienced was a seizure Due to Brain cancer they found while running tests and that they need to be transferred to a larger hospital in Dallas with and oncology department better equipped to handle the case. Around Midnight he was transported to Dallas Methodist.  Once at the Hospital in Dallas he began a series of tests and scans. And as if finding out you have cancer in your brain isn't enough they also discovered he has metastasis in his lung, kidney, liver and bone. What started out as two Mets in his brain ended up being 7 in the brain and more in the body.
Going back 3 years ago, Charles had melanoma on his back that he had surgically removed. He was told that they got good margins and with 5 lymph nodes removed and tested he was told he was cancer free. Needless to say this was Completely out of left field.

Charles is a very hard working Man as a CDL Hot shot Driver, An Awesome loving husband and father, brother and son, My daughter is a stay at home mom for their son(my Grandson) A Type 1 Diabetic who is hypo and hyper unaware, so she is his lifeline. They have 3 children total living in the home. Charles is now unable to work, due to the seizure activity they have suspended  his CDL/ Driver License. Charles doesn't have health insurance.

This has devastated our family and we are asking for donations for him and his family to help with cost of living and medical expenses. To date we have been told his radiation treatment is going to be $38,000. The hospital is applying for assistance for him however that can take from 6 weeks to 6 months. We know Charles will be out of work for at least 6 months to 1 year, so any help would be greatly appreciated . He is a very proud man and not being able to support his family on top of all of the other emotions involved with a devastating cancer diagnosis of this magnitude is just unimaginable unless you have lived it. My Hope is to raise as much as possible to ease his mind so that he can focus on himself and his treatment and healing. He will be starting radiation in the next 8 days and chemotherapy will follow.

Your monetary and/ or spiritual support is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
