A Mother's Story: Caring for Janiel

My name is kayon dacosta, and I’m the mother of an extraordinary 11-year-old boy named Janiel. He has profound autism—a condition that deeply affects how he experiences and interacts with the world. Every day is a challenge, not just for him, but for me as his only caregiver.

Janiel is full of life, but he doesn't understand danger. He often wanders off without warning, puts himself at risk, and frequently destroys things around the house. I live in constant fear for his safety. I cannot turn my back for a moment. He doesn’t speak, and he doesn’t understand when I try to calm him or explain things. It's heartbreaking.

There is no one else—just me and Janiel. I haven't had a full night’s sleep in years. I can’t work, I can’t rest, I can’t even take care of myself properly because Janiel needs my full attention day and night. I am physically and emotionally exhausted. Some days, I don’t know how I make it through. But I do—because I love my son more than anything in this world.

What I truly need is a safer environment for him. I want to secure the home so he can’t wander into danger. I need special locks, window guards, and protective materials that can withstand the damage when he’s overwhelmed and lashes out. I dream of creating a space where he can feel calm, where he’s not always at risk—and where I can finally breathe a little easier.

But I can’t do this on my own. That’s why I’m asking for help—from kind hearts who understand what it means to care for someone with special needs. Any support would mean the world to us. It would help make Janiel’s world safer, and mine a little more bearable.
