My son has always been the safe parent for his children and the sole provider for his family. Recently, he became the victim of repeated domestic violence by his ex-girlfriend. In order to keep his children safe and prevent CPS from taking them, he made the difficult decision to leave their apartment and move in with us. As his business slowed, financial strains mounted, and the ongoing struggles with his ex only made things harder. When she left rehab and tried to take the children, he fought to protect them, ultimately gaining educational and medical rights after she signed them over. Unfortunately, he could not afford an attorney and faced these challenges alone.

The stress and pressure took a toll on his mental health. He suffered a breakdown, and during a traffic stop for speeding, he panicked at the thought of not being able to get home to his kids. In his distress, he harmed himself, which led to additional charges and a high bond instead of the mental health support he desperately needed. We have been working with his doctor to get his medications to him in jail, and he is making some progress, but he needs to be home with his children and start a program for his bipolar disorder.

Legal fees for his representation and aftercare are significant, and there will be additional costs for mental health support. His boss is holding his job, but there is no income until he can return to work. He has been the sole provider for this family for years, and this situation has taken a huge toll.
