Hello everyone my sons name is Deeson 3 years old he was born with cerebral palsy which is lack of of oxygen to the brain. My son is not able to crawl sit or stand without assistance. I am a single mother 27 years old. I lost my job of 5 years during covid 19 due to lack of child care for my medically challenged son. My job was giving me great health care coverage for my son and I. Unfortunately I was not able to keep up with the COBRA payments due to lack of funds. We are currently on Medicaid. However Medicaid only covers certain equipments and certain styles. For example Medicaid issued me a stander for my son which design is huge and boxy. It barely fits through my NYC apartment. One night I was doing research and I found a stander online that was really convenient, smaller and with handles making it easier to maneuver. I was very excited to discover this and let my sons doctor know I really needed this. I was disappointed when I discovered that Medicaid only pays for the “basic” and I wouldn’t be able to get another stander for another 5 years. They also told me I wouldn’t be able to get a medical chair for my son because the wheelchair stroller I was issued is considered a chair and again I would have to wait 5 years. The wheelchair stroller unfortunately is not in my apartment but in the lobby because my building does not have an elevator and again does not fit in my small 1 bedroom. We do use the stander i just can’t move the stander around, but I cannot leave him unattended in his stander. He also needs to stand for a long period of time due to a ongoing hip problem that can turn into surgery in a few years. I need different equipments as well like a bicycle for my sweet boy. He loves riding his special bike at his physical therapy but again it is not covered by insurance. I just want to see my son smile and be able to get better in order to see him walk one day.
