my sister and her husband have been struggling with conceiving for years, but giving up is not an option.
I was talking with her and she decided she would like to share her story in her own words… so please keep reading
We started our fertility journey in 2016 after we got married. After trying naturally and being unsuccessful, we went to Strong Fertility. We were diagnosed with unexplained infertility. So helpful right? We went through 6 IUIs which all failed. After that we took a much needed emotional break. In the beginning of 2021 we finally mustered up the courage to pursue IVF. We had to go through multiple procedures and testing before we were able to officially start. During our first round in May we had 16 eggs that were retrieved. Only 3 of them made it to the embryo stage. We did a fresh transfer of one embryo 5 days after retrieval, which unfortunately failed. Since we had two more that were frozen, we didn't lose hope! After more medication and appointments and testing, we transferred our last two embryos together on our wedding anniversary in August. Guess what?! It worked! I was pregnant. We have never seen a positive pregnancy test before. We were over the moon. I had three blood tests to confirm my levels were rising appropriately, which they were. We went in to the clinic at 7 weeks pregnant to have our first ultrasound done. There was no baby. We had an anembryonic pregnancy, which would end with a miscarriage. I opted to surgically have the placenta and gestational sac removed, because it was the quickest option. After surgery my levels took multiple months to get back to normal which means waiting to start our second round. We finally were able to start our second round in November! Just in time before our insurance starts over for the new year. We went through another round of medications and injections and ultrasounds and tried a few new protocols for a better outcome this time. Everything was looking great! That was until I tested positive for covid two days before my egg retrieval. This means my whole cycle had to be canceled and there was nothing more we could do except wait.
We are about to start our third round and last attempt to have a baby. My body and my heart are both tired. My husband has given me over 100 injections, I've had multiple surgeries, too many internal ultrasounds to count, so much blood work I don't know how I have any blood left.
My insurance has a lifetime maximum amount for fertility medication, and we are just about at that limit. And since it is a new year, my deductible has now restarted which means our medications and bills are way more expensive than the previous rounds. Insurance "helps" but we are paying for the majority out of pocket. So far we have paid close to $20,000 out of pocket since our journey began.
