Almost 6 years ago, our family experienced an unimaginable tragedy — our mother was murdered by her husband. In the aftermath of this horrific event, my sister was left to handle the devastating task of cleaning and restoring our mother’s home.

She was told by the cleanup company that they would put a lien on the property for payment. Believing that to be true, she allowed the work to be done — only to later find out that the company instead sued her personally for the entire amount.

Despite her efforts, she was ordered to pay $36,000 but was able to settle for $22,000, an amount none of us simply have. My sister later took the homeowner (our mother’s husband) to court and won the case. However, since he is now serving over 25 years in prison, it’s very unlikely she will ever receive the judgment or any repayment.

Now she has only six months to pay the full balance. She’s grieving, emotionally exhausted, and burdened by a debt that arose from trying to do the right thing for our family during an already heartbreaking time.
