Hi guys! My name is Bailie, i'm one of Shermans grand daughters. For anyone who knows my Pop Pop, you know he’s the kind of man who would give the shirt off his back to someone in need, even when he had little to nothing himself. He’s worked hard his entire life, often putting others before himself, and even now, when life has thrown him challenge after challenge, his first instinct is still to make people laugh and feel loved; but the past two years have been some of the hardest of his life. In late 2023, when he noticed his right leg didn’t quite feel right , it was like it had a mind of its own. What started as a small issue climbing stairs quickly turned into something much more serious. Within months, he could barely lift his foot off the ground. Tasks that most of us take for granted, walking across the room, getting dressed, stepping into a car, became exhausting, and disheartening battles that he faced daily. He’s spent the last two years in and out of doctor’s offices, enduring countless MRIs, X-rays, and appointments with specialists who couldn’t quite piece together what was happening. Despite his growing weakness, frustration, and depression with the whole situation and the intense life shift it has caused him, he has continued to work and push through it all. After seeing six neurosurgeons and two neurologists, we finally have answers. The cause of his struggles is a severe issue with his L4-L5 vertebrae, where a bulging disc is pressing on the nerves that control leg and foot movement. Unfortunately, the only long-term solution is a spinal fusion surgery, followed by over six weeks of home recovery ; a recovery that will require time, rest, and stability that he simply cannot afford on his own right now. My Pop Pop has never been one to ask for help, in fact, writing this and allowing me to share his story was incredibly difficult for him; but right now, he needs a community around him the same way he’s always shown up for everyone else. He’s not just trying to walk again. He’s fighting to get back the pieces of life that make him our POP POP, our SHERMAN that we all know and love. He just wants his independence back and yes, the chance to someday swing his leg over his “baby” (his motorcycle) and feel that freedom again.
