Help my path into nature conservation

Hi, my name is Adrian Avellaneda I'm a Peruvian biologist. Since I was a kid, I was fascinated by how nature is capable of shaping life in a great variety of forms, like Insects. As I’ve grown in my studies, I ‘ve often wondered why we tend to study nature primarily from a utilitarian perspective, while neglecting it’s conservation.
I am now committed to a career in conservation, with specific focus on Insect conservation. Insects are among the most important organisms in ecosystem, yet they receive less than 10% of global conservation funding – largely due to their negative reputation in society. This mismatch poses a threat to global biodiversity and human well-being.

My Journey So Far
During my Bachelor’s studies in my home country, I gained valuable experience from laboratory work to field research, which made me realize my love for nature environments. I had the opportunity to visit pristine ecosystems and witnessed firsthand the profound impact of human activities on these natural environments.

I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics at the University of Jena in Germany.
My thesis project was selected to be presented in the International Conference for Conservation Biology. A great opportunity to actively network with conservation organizations, gain insights about ongoing insect conservation studies worldwide and to inspire new research and opportunities I can apply in the Global South where I am from.

Here is a video of what my master thesis is about :)

Additionally, I have been selected, along with 31 other participants to be part of Frankfurt Spring School on Conservation Project Management 2025. This School represents a unique opportunity to gain the project management and leadership skills necessary to fulfil my dream of establish an NGO that focus on insect conservation in the tropics through citizen science, awareness and education.

Since I moved to Germany in 2023, I have supported myself through two student jobs: one at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology and another producing laboratory pipets. However, since starting my thesis work in September 2024, balancing these jobs has become increasingly challenging. I've been unable to maintain my two jobs in order to give priority to write. My current job at MPI is not enough to cover my monthly expenses.

For these reasons, the funds I raise will be used to:
Cover flight costs: Enabling me to travel to Brisbane, Australia and present my study at the International Conference for Conservation Biology.
Support my stay in Germany: Providing financial assistance during the "Frankfurt Spring School on Conservation project management".
Assisting part of my living expenses until I secure a PhD scholarship or additional funding.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and considering supporting my journey into advocating for the little things that run the world. Every contribution brings me one step closer to making a meaningful impact in conservation.
