Help Us Keep Fighting for Stefan

A message from Malin Johansson

I never imagined I would have to write these words.

The love of my life, Stefan Lasson, is 68 years old. Before cancer entered our lives, he was the

healthiest, strongest, most independent man I knew. He was always the one helping others—the man

people could count on. Full of life, full of strength, always putting everyone else first.

Then, in August 2025, everything changed.

Stefan was diagnosed with stage IV prostate cancer.

There are moments in life that divide everything into “before” and “after.” Hearing those words was

one of them.

Since that day, every part of our lives has changed.

I've watched the man I love lose 33 kilograms, going from 83 kg to just 50 kg. I've held him through

nights of unbearable pain. I've listened to him cry because the suffering felt impossible to endure.

There were moments when he felt so overwhelmed by pain that he no longer wanted to keep fighting.

As the person who loves him most, there is no feeling more heartbreaking than standing beside

someone you would give your own life to save—and knowing you cannot take their pain away.

Despite everything, Stefan has never stopped wanting to live.

Neither have I.

Together, we have done everything we can to give him the best possible chance. Alongside his

hospital care, we have changed our entire lifestyle, improved our nutrition, eliminated sugar and

grains, and pursued complementary therapies that we hope will support his overall health and quality

of life.

The journey has been anything but easy.

Stefan developed severe weakness and nerve problems in his legs. At one point he told me, “It feels

like my feet are no longer my own.” Sitting became painful. Sleeping became difficult. Some nights he

walked for hours because lying down hurt too much.

Then came another frightening emergency.

One day he was unable to urinate. At the hospital doctors drained nearly one liter of urine and

inserted a catheter, which thankfully relieved much of his pain. A few weeks later, when the catheter

was removed, he still could not urinate on his own and another catheter had to be inserted.Just after his 68th birthday, following discussions with his doctors, Stefan underwent surgery to stop

his body's testosterone production in an effort to slow the cancer. Watching him face that operation

while frightened and exhausted broke my heart. Leaving him alone in the hospital that night was one

of the hardest things I have ever done.

Recovery has been slow.

Even today, everyday tasks that most of us never think about—getting dressed, getting into a car,

sitting comfortably—can still be difficult.

Throughout this journey, we have traveled countless hours across Sweden seeking additional

treatments. From southern Sweden we regularly drive to Stockholm and Norrköping, often spending

6–7 hours each way. Every trip means fuel, accommodation, parking, food, treatment costs, and

time away from home.

The financial burden has become overwhelming.

To care for Stefan, I reduced my work to part-time so I could be with him day and night. I help him

shower, dress, move around, attend appointments, and simply get through each day.

I would do it all again without hesitation.

But it has come at a cost.

Stefan is retired. Our savings have been exhausted, and we have already spent more than 350.000

SEK on travel, treatments, medications, and related expenses.

We are hoping to continue the therapies that have become part of Stefan's care, explore additional

supportive treatments such as vitamin C infusions and oxygen therapy, and consult with a specialist

in Germany. That consultation alone is expected to cost around 40,000 SEK, before travel and

accommodation.

Asking for help is incredibly difficult.

Stefan has spent his life helping other people. He never imagined he would be the one asking for

support.

Today, we have no choice.

Every act of kindness reminds us that we are not fighting this battle alone.

An Update Filled with Hope

There have been moments that have given us hope.Since the beginning of 2026, Stefan has continued traveling to Stockholm for treatment. His strength

has gradually returned. His balance has improved. His voice is stronger again. His appetite has come

back, and he has gained weight—from 50 kg to 63kg.

His PSA levels have also decreased significantly over time, from 1,095 in December 2025 to 10 in

July 2026. While we know cancer is unpredictable and there are still many challenges ahead, these

changes have given us hope and encouraged us to keep going.

There have also been setbacks. Stefan has experienced liver problems that required changes to his

medications, digestive issues, and new pain that continue to require medical attention. Every new

symptom brings fresh worries and difficult questions.

But every morning we wake up together is another day worth fighting for.

This journey has taught us that hope isn't something you find once.

It is something you choose, every single day.
