Today, my parents’ neighbors experienced a devastating house fire that has left them without a home. Thankfully, no one was home at the time, and while three firefighters were injured, we are grateful they have been reported to be okay. The Cranston Fire Marshal has declared the house a complete loss. As renters, they lost everything they owned in a matter of hours and now face the overwhelming challenge of starting over from scratch. The renters did not have renter’s insurance, which makes recovery even more difficult.
I have vivid memories of that home, as I grew up next door and one of my favorite neighbors lived there years ago. My parents still live next door and have grown especially close to the residents on the second floor. Every family that has lived in that house has been a great neighbor, but these have been especially wonderful. Just yesterday, during the Nor’easter, they helped my parents by shoveling them out—without even being asked. That simple act of kindness speaks volumes about the kind of neighbors they are.
Among those affected is a couple living on the second floor who are expecting a baby. Instead of preparing for this joyful new chapter, they are now facing the uncertainty of finding new housing and replacing all of their belongings.
I am organizing this effort because it’s simply the right thing to do. My parents care deeply and want to help in every way they can, and since they aren’t particularly tech-savvy, I offered to step in and help coordinate support on their behalf.
I am asking for your support to help my parents’ neighbors get back on their feet. Donations will go directly toward replacing essential clothing and helping them secure longer-term housing. As more exact information becomes available, I will update this page accordingly. I’m also certain there will be a need for clothing drives and additional in-kind support in the days ahead.
Thank you for any support you’re able to offer—whether through a donation, sharing this page, or future contributions. Every bit of kindness truly means the world to them during this incredibly difficult time.
