Even though it's so difficult, I'm doing this to ask for help and also to offer a warning so this doesn't happen to you or someone you know. Last week my elderly parents fell prey to an online cyber-criminal and they lost all the money they had in their checking and savings account. It was a horrific 48 hours where my parents were told their accounts had been breached and the only way to protect their money was to do a wire transfer to a bank in Thailand. They were so scared and were told not to tell anyone. In retrospect, there were so many red flags. But at the time, they were only doing what they thought was best to rescue their money.
I'd love to see if we can raise a little money to help them pay their rent for a month. Every little bit helps, even $5 or $10.
According to their bank, U.S. Bank, there's nothing that can be done to get their money back. They also claim that this happens all the time to elderly people. Wouldn't it would be amazing if some greater security measures could be put in place by our banks so this didn't happen "all the time?" Perhaps a time-delay of transfer, or a required call to a family member, etc. This would've saved my parents $31K.
Just so you know, we will be charged a 2.9% +$.30 fee per each donation. GoFundMe will ask if you want to leave a tip...that goes to them, not us.
Thank you so much for your help -- I look forward to blessing my parents with your help.
