My parents have always been there for me, and now I’m doing everything I can to support them as my dad’s illness progresses. My mom is his primary caretaker, and it’s been incredibly hard on her—this is her second time going through this, after caring for her own father. She works full-time and is doing her best to keep up, but the stress and exhaustion are overwhelming. We’ve tried to get in-home care, but it’s been nearly impossible to find someone who can be there consistently. The caregiver we found can only come once or twice a week, so my dad is often alone, which worries us both. He’s gotten lost multiple times, and my mom is constantly anxious about his safety. We’ve also tried to get VA insurance, but that process has been long and difficult, adding to the stress.

We’ve started looking at memory care facilities that specialize in helping people like my dad, but the costs are staggering—especially for a private room, which would help him feel more comfortable and safe. My parents are on a fixed income, and my mom barely makes above minimum wage. I’m an only child, and our family is very small, so it’s just the two of us trying to make sure my dad gets the care he needs. I don’t live in the same city or state as my parents, which makes it even harder to help.
