My niece is a remarkable 19-year-old who has faced more challenges than most people do in a lifetime. When she was just three years old, her mother left an abusive relationship with her father, who struggled with addiction. Her mother went on to have more children, and my niece became the primary caregiver for her younger siblings. With no support from any of the fathers and her mother working tirelessly at a poverty-level job, my niece had to make the difficult decision to drop out of traditional high school so she could stay home and care for the kids.


Despite these hardships, she never gave up on her education. She completed her high school requirements through an online program, showing incredible determination and resilience. However, her diploma is being withheld until her tuition is paid in full. Without this diploma, she cannot enroll in college and pursue her dream of becoming a therapist—a dream inspired by her desire to help other young people who have experienced similar hardships.


I am her aunt and the only family she has left. Both of us grew up surrounded by abuse, but I was able to break the cycle in my own life thanks to the kindness of strangers who helped me along the way. Now, I am asking for help to give my niece the same chance.
