Hello, my name is Ron McCaffrey & I am on a mission to help my mother, Rhonda McCaffrey, who is 51 years old & has Huntington's Disease.
Sadly this is an inherited disease she got from her mother & is also shared with her brother & 2 of his children. Huntington's is a degenerative disease that causes a progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. Unfortunately, this disease also has a 50% chance of being passed.
Within the last eight weeks, my mother lost her car, job & home all at once; losing even one of these things can be very stressful, but for all three, it's been tough, to put it lightly.
Helping someone with HD has many obstacles & consequences that can spread throughout their life, such as loss of job, reduced dependency, impoverished social life, impaired mobility, and lack of understanding & tolerance from others. Along with this, many cognitive functions become limited, including memory, decision making, critical thinking, multitasking & concentration. Involuntary movements & difficulty with speech are just a few others that my mother has been exhibiting more & more as the time passes.
I am currently trying to raise $3,000 to help get my mother a 5th wheel or apartment, so she isn't homeless. She is to the point she cannot care for herself or work anymore, but the system has been complicated to navigate, with so many time-gated appointments & search online for options that can help support her. Luckily some of her friends have been helping with what they can. Currently, she's living in a hotel room & was in a tent before that. I'm praying for something to come through. Financially I only make so much & I do not live in the same city as my mother, so it has been challenging.
Her unemployment was denied from a job she held for more than ten years because she hurt herself & couldn't physically walk & lost her car the same month. Also, EBT is not instant, so she has had zero financial assistance aside from what a few of us have been able to contribute.
Any amount would be greatly appreciated, no matter how small. Thank you so much for reading this far.
