Help My Mother Maruja, 89, Get Life-Saving Surgery in Peru

Hello, my name is Maritza Correa Álamo. I am a Peruvian, Hispanic immigrant living in North Carolina, United States.

Today I am facing one of the hardest challenges of my life. I am fundraising for my mother, who is currently hospitalized in Peru and urgently needs hip surgery after a terrible fall. The surgery is very expensive and not covered by her insurance. We need to raise around $35,000 to cover surgery, hospitalization, medications, post-operative care, and rehabilitation.

Our family cannot cover this amount on our own, which is why I am reaching out with all my heart. Any donation, no matter how small, will make a big difference. We would also be so grateful if you could share this campaign with others who might be able to help.

Let me tell you a little about her, my mother’s name is María Ignacia, but everyone knows her as “Maruja.” At just 16 years old, she migrated alone from Piura to Lima, showing strength and courage from an early age. She worked as a nurse assistant and, by the age of 21, had already formed a family with my father, eventually raising six children together.

Life was not always easy: they faced painful losses, and four years ago my father passed away. She misses him deeply, yet her resilient spirit keeps her strong. Today, at 89 years old, with 6 children, 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren, she continues to be joyful, caring, loving, and for those who know her, she is the best Peruvian cook in the world.

Hoy me toca vivir una de las pruebas más duras: estoy recaudando fondos para mi madre, quien está hospitalizada en Perú y necesita una OPERACION URGENTE DE CADERA tras una terrible caída. La cirugía es muy costosa y no está cubierta por su seguro. Hemos recibido ayuda de la familia mas cercana, a quienes agradecemos infinitamente, pero necesitamos recaudar alrededor de $35,000, para cubrir cirugía, hospitalización, medicamentos, cuidados postoperatorios y rehabilitación.

La vida, no siempre fue fácil: enfrentaron pérdidas dolorosas y hace cuatro años mi padre falleció. Ella lo extraña muchísimo, pero su espíritu resiliente la mantiene firme. A sus 89 años, con 6 hijos, 9 nietos y 3 bisnietos, sigue siendo alegre, solidaria, luchadora y, para quienes la conocemos, la mejor cocinera peruana del mundo! Mi madre es un ejemplo de vida, amor y dedicación. Hoy necesita nuestra ayuda para seguir luchando.
