On New Year’s Eve, a fire broke out in my mom’s apartment building. She was asleep in the unit right next to where the fire started and had to evacuate suddenly. While we are incredibly grateful that she survived, her life was turned upside down in a matter of hours.

Because of the fire, my mom has been displaced from her home and is currently living in a hotel while she figures out her next steps. Tragically, one of her two cats later passed away due to complications from the fire, which has been devastating for her. Her cat, Shadow, wasn’t just a pet—he was her constant companion and part of her family.

Right now, my mom is facing unexpected expenses as she waits to find out if and when she can return home, including food costs, replacing essential belongings, and costs related to getting Shadow the help he needed after the fire. The emotional toll has been overwhelming, and the financial strain has only added to that stress. My mom is on PWD and works 1 day a week at Superstore.
