My mom is a strong, healthy 57-year-old woman who has always taken care of herself and everyone around her. She lives alone in Bucharest, Romania. One afternoon, she came home and suddenly collapsed on the floor of her house. Her blood pressure caused a severe stroke. She had no phone in her hand. No one to hear her. No one to find her. She spent the entire night on the floor fighting for her life. The next morning, a concerned friend found her and called for help. She was rushed to the ER and admitted to the ICU, unable to move or speak. I am her only child, living thousands of miles away, unable to be there physically while she was in critical condition. That has been one of the hardest parts of this nightmare. After being stabilized in the ICU, she was transferred to the Neurology department in Bucharest. Forty-eight hours later, she is stable and awake. For that, we are endlessly grateful. We are praying for her strength and for the incredible friends who are trying to support her there. But this is only the beginning. Her recovery will require intensive physical therapy, ongoing neurological care, full-time assistance for daily tasks, and help with cooking, cleaning, and basic mobility. She will not be able to work or support herself during this time. All of her living and medical expenses will need to be covered. I will do everything I can as her daughter, but the financial burden is significant.
