Dear Friends,
My name is Matthew Jones, and I’m an EMT/ Dispatcher for the city of Yonkers. I’m writing to ask for your help on behalf of my incredible mother—a woman who has sacrificed everything for her family but is now in desperate need of support.
My mom is 53 years old and has not been able to work for eight years due to grand petit seizures. Her condition began during the summer before my junior year of high school, and while medication has helped reduce the frequency of her episodes, it has also left her unable to work the way she used to. Despite these challenges, she has remained a pillar of strength, raising my two younger brothers and me as a single mom after her divorce in 2014. She also cares for my 82-year-old grandmother, all while managing a three-family home in South Yonkers.
A Lifetime of Giving
For over 17 years, my mom worked tirelessly as a CNA at The Grove of Valhalla (formerly The Hebrew Home) in Westchester County. She cared deeply for her patients, giving her all to the job and pouring herself into a system she believed in. But when she needed help, the system didn’t do the same for her. After her diagnosis, her employer couldn’t accommodate her condition, forcing her to leave the job she loved. Efforts to secure disability benefits through her 1199 union were unsuccessful because she was no longer an active employee.
On top of that, my mom rented the upstairs unit of our home to tenants placed by CVR, a government housing program. Over their three-year stay, these tenants caused severe damage, leaving the unit nearly unlivable. After they moved out, my mom had to pour over $20,000 into repairs—draining her savings and dipping into funds meant for other needs.
Why She Needs Help
My mom’s financial situation is now dire. She worries about making next month’s mortgage payment, putting food on the table, and supporting my two brothers. My youngest brother is 14, and my middle brother, who is 21 and autistic, needs specialized support to prepare for his future. My mom had saved to send him to trade school, but those funds are now gone because of the unexpected repair costs.
As her eldest son, I’ve been doing all I can to help, working extra shifts as a first responder in Yonkers. I follow her example of hard work and faith, but soon I’ll be leaving to study overseas to pursue my dream. My mom insists I focus on school, but it breaks my heart knowing she’s struggling to carry this burden alone.
Normally, I wouldn’t ask for this. My mom has always been the one to figure things out, even in the hardest times. But this situation is more than any one person can handle, and I can’t stand by while she continues to struggle alone.
How You Can Help
My mom has always been the glue holding our family together. She worked tirelessly to provide for us, took care of others in her job, and never hesitated to help those in need. Now, she’s the one in need.
Your support can make a difference. Donations will help her cover the mortgage, meet essential living expenses, and ensure my brothers and grandmother have what they need. Your generosity can also give her the chance to rebuild and create a future where she can support my brother’s trade school dreams and regain stability for our family.
The funds will be used for the following:
- paying the mortgage and bills
- providing food for my mother, siblings and my grandmother
- help pay up the debts owed from fixing up the house
- assisting my mom to rebuild back her savings because she put a majority of her whole life earnings into this house and it would be a shame to see all the effort go to waste
If you’re unable to donate, sharing this message with others would mean the world to us.
Thank you for reading and for any kindness you can offer. May God bless you for your generosity.
Sincerely,
Matthew Jones
