Myra is a 12-year-old female Cardigan Welsh corgi. She's been in good health overall, still running around, borking at people and cars and dogs, and generally enjoying her life – and she has cancer in her urethra.
She is very much my late wife's dog. Amy had wanted a corgi all her life, and happened one day to encounter Myra and her breeder. Myra was (and is) afraid of strangers, but she made a beeline for Amy. Two days later, we were Myra's home.
She takes security seriously, patrolling the perimeter of the property many times a day and carefully inspecting new things. Whenever Amy and I went somewhere without her, Amy would say as we walked out the door, "Myra, you're in charge."
Myra will bork at you (a lot) when she doesn't know you, but once she accepts that you're safe, she's a sweetheart who loves neck and ear scritches. Though she's never had puppies of her own, she's a great mama who knows how to play just the right amount for however old a puppy is. When she was younger, one of her favorite things to do was peel the covering off a tennis ball and chew up the rubbery core.
Myra is a lot like Amy was, and we would joke about how appropriate it was that 3/4 of the letters in "m-y-r-a" are "a-m-y". This stout corgi meant so much to Amy that one time she said, "Myra, you don't get to die."
I lost Amy to the effects of chronic alcoholism in 2021, and Myra is hands-down the biggest piece of Amy I have left. I noticed in late December that it was taking her longer to pee, and it took lots of tests and x-rays – and time, it turns out – before we discovered a mass in her urethra that wasn't there three months ago.
She's on medication that is helping a lot, and seeing her able to go upstairs again is wonderful. Unfortunately, getting to this point was expensive, several thousands of dollars. I've had some fantastic financial help, but I'm teetering on the edge of a financial cliff, and any help you can afford would mean the world. Especially since I don't know where this cancer will take us.
