Help my Husky fight her Demons - Battle against Anxiety
Donation protected
Huskies are such remarkable and beautiful dogs - which unfortunately might be their ultimate downfall.
We are Magda and Reece and we have two amazing dogs - Ciri (Siberian Husky) and Winter (Siberian Husky/Alaskan Malamute cross). We have rescued both of them. Ciri was a stray abandoned on the streets of Manchester until she's found her way to the Cheshire Dog Home and from there to our home. We rehomed Winter 3 months later - officially 'rehomed' but realistically it was another rescue - supposedly had a home but it was one with very little human presence which resulted in a very lonely puppy.
Which has resulted in a very anxious adult dog.
We've had our dogs for almost 2 years now and life couldn't have been better for these two and for us - they were the daily joy of every activity and interaction, we were taking our dogs absolutely everywhere with us and loved all adventures we've had since we've got them. This beautiful peace has been disturbed when we have agreed to take care of someone else's dog two months back.
While the interaction between the 3 of them was really friendly and playful, this has triggered something in Winter that no one could take back - the anxiety she has had after being raised as a pup being left alone and having no real bond with a human or another dog until she came to be with us, some delicate balance Ciri and Winter had going - was gone.
Winter has since attacked my other dog Ciri multiple times. Ciri was rushed to emergency vets twice after this has occurred and is still recovering from her recent injuries.
The thing about Winter is - she is not outright aggressive. She loves to play with other dogs, she loves meeting new humans and aims to lick their faces where possible. Under this brick layer of insecurities ingrained into her by neglect at her puppy stage - she is a real softy and such an adorable dog!
We had to completely separate our dogs after the last attack and they have been this way ever since it happened. This has made Winter even more anxious. She has entered a vicious circle where she really yearns to be with Ciri but cannot trust herself (and neither can we) in which manner the encounter would go. To protect Ciri, the separation continues.
While some of you (and we thought the same) would say she simply needs to be rehomed, we have had evaluations done on Winter by dog trainers and behaviourists who have stated she's completely consumed by her anxiety which is driving her behaviour at the moment. This makes her really unhappy but changing homes will not magically make her better, not only it would be passing the problem to someone else but potentially putting another dog and Winter herself in danger.
We have spent all our savings on vet bills recently to aid Ciri with her injuries and the insurance company is not really cooperating. While Winter is also insured, the assessment is that if this is a problem that existed since she was a pup (therefore way before we had her or insurance policy started) they will not cover any expenses in making her well.
Just as humans do, dogs can suffer from anxiety and depression, and it is not a life sentence. We have found a facility that can take her on a residential training camp where she will have a support from the specialist in dog behaviourism and training areas. After 4-6 weeks of intense therapy and training she would then be professionally reintegrated with Ciri and she could be her best happy self with no demons from the past haunting her.
This is our biggest dream - to bring our dog back and bring them both together again. I humbly ask for your support, any amount is welcome as we try to tackle this problem and fight against the reality we have found ourselves in.
Thank you for your time.
