My husband is a quadriplegic Army veteran who served our country for 17 years before an accident changed his life. We live in a ranch style house with a basement, and for eight years, he was unable to access the basement. The Gary Sinise Foundation generously remodeled our main floor and installed a lift-type elevator, hoping to restore his independence and allow him to move freely throughout our home.
Unfortunately, the elevator has been a constant source of stress and worry. In the six years since it was installed, it has broken down about 50 times. One of us has been trapped inside at least ten times, and we've had to call the fire department to help us out. It's especially difficult and dangerous to get my husband out, but the firefighters always do their best. The elevator has been unreliable from the start, and now, after a month and a half of being broken, we are desperate for a solution. We've reached out to the company that makes the lift, but so far, we haven't received any help.
The company that installs elevators suggested a regular elevator, but the cost is far beyond what we can afford. We are hoping to raise funds to either install the recommended elevator or find another company that can help us. Anything you can donate will be deeply appreciated. I just want my husband to have access to our whole house and regain the freedom he deserves after all he has given.
