Help my Host Family in Morocco During COVID-19
Donation protected
Hello! My name is Viviana Prado-Núñez, and I'm a recent graduate of Columbia University who studied abroad in Morocco in Spring 2019.
I’m hoping to raise money for my host family who is currently struggling to make basic ends meet due to COVID-19. Prior to the pandemic, my host family’s income came from housing host students and tourists through Airbnb, as well as a shop they rented out to a man who has been unable to pay them rent for two months now. As a result, my host family has frequently gone multiple days without eating, and just a few weeks ago, I had to emergency transfer them the funds for basic necessities because my host mother hadn’t eaten in a week. To make matters worse, my host father, Mohamed, is currently suffering from a back injury that doesn’t allow him to sit or stand for more than 30 minutes at a time, which means that he cannot go out and search for work himself.
As of right now, my host family will not have any form of income for at least a year and need to provide for a family of three children—so I am fundraising for the cost of two months' worth of basic necessities as well as the money my host mother, Nadia, would need to open her own store in central Rabat, a store that the family has owned and operated successfully previously but which had to close due to pregnancy complications on Nadia's part a few years ago.
To be honest, I’m not sure I have the words for the amount of terror and heartbreak I feel right now on their behalf, or how unfair it is that the people I hold such deep love for are being forced to suffer in this way. Even though it’s been two years since we’ve met, I have never more strongly felt that they are my family. I truly wish I could help them out on my own, but I myself am living month to month, and the fact I was able to provide for them for even one month was a miracle in of itself.
Long story short: Please help out my host family if you can. Any donation big or small goes a long way. I know Nadia, her family, and I would deeply appreciate it ❤️
AN UPDATE ON HOW THINGS CURRENTLY STAND:
As of right now, this GoFundMe has allowed Nadia and her family to comfortably save for basic necessities and also put down an advance on a store in Rabat. We have until the end of March to reach our goal so that they can buy the store outright and hopefully never have to ask for this kind of money again.
Much love to you all and wishing everyone better days.
Love,
Viviana
