My family is facing an incredibly difficult time after the loss of my sister. Nearly 9 months after her passing, we are only now entering probate because her children have refused to cooperate on the sale of the home, making an already painful situation even more complicated. My grandmother, who is in her 90s and has dementia, has been solely responsible for the house for well over 2 decades and is now incurring significant property taxes and insurance costs while not being able to reside there due to its condition and her need for full-time care. Her resources are dwindling quickly, and since the legal process will take at least 6-12 months before being able to sell the home, this delay will leave her in a dire financial situation within the next few months.
My grandmother is truly the most wonderful woman. She has endured the unimaginable pain of losing two children, and her two children still living have selfishly abandoned her for inexcusable reasons. Yet she continues to show love and strength every day. Her social security only covers a fraction of her monthly living and care expenses at her facility. I have been traveling back and forth from CO to NY to be with her as much as possible and to try and clean up the unimaginable mess she was left to deal with on her own, and have personally incurred substantial expenses. I am doing everything I can, but I cannot support her for much longer, and her savings will be almost gone within a few months. Another tax payment is due, and I am scared that we will not be able to afford her care much longer. It would destroy me to have to move her somewhere she may not be treated as well as she deserves. And, with her dementia, her care costs will only increase with time, making this situation even more urgent.
She deserves the world, and I just want to make sure she can live the rest of her life happily and in a safe, warm and caring facility. It is very hard for me to ask for help, but I cannot hold the burden of this scenario much longer.
