Summary

My name is Luis Pereira, and I am organizing this fundraiser for my grandmother Felipa, a loving woman who has always put her family first. She needs a third hip replacement surgery due to a persistent infection in her hip implant. Fortunately, the infection has not spread, and she feels healthy otherwise, but the hip issue must be treated immediately.

She is visiting the U.S. on a tourist visa and has no health insurance. Travel insurance will not cover this pre-existing condition. The $37,000 cost is for the surgery itself. Recovery costs will come later, but we urgently need to raise this amount to have the surgery done as soon as possible. Our family is contributing what we can, but we cannot cover the full cost. Anything helps, and sharing this fundraiser can make a huge difference.

Full Story

My name is Luis Pereira, and I am organizing this fundraiser for my grandmother Felipa, one of the kindest, most humble people you could ever meet.

Felipa has always been a loving grandmother who never complains, no matter what life brings her. Every time I visit her in Honduras, she greets me with a big smile, a fresh cup of coffee, and her homemade bread. Seeing her joy when we surprise her or share simple moments together has always been one of my greatest blessings.

This year, I was finally able to bring her to the United States after she received her tourist visa. She smiled with wonder when she saw the ocean from above, and her joy grew even more when she tried her first Chick-fil-A sandwich with my wife and me here in the United States.

Her Story

About four years ago, while washing dishes in Honduras, my grandmother fell and broke her hip. She underwent her first hip replacement surgery, which was extremely painful and uncomfortable. Walking was very difficult, and the recovery was slow. After the first surgery, fluid-filled blisters appeared on her wound, which never fully healed. Despite this, she never wanted to worry anyone about medical bills.

The wound began expelling white and yellow fluids, a sign of infection. Despite antibiotics, the pain and discharge persisted for over a year. Six months after surgery, during a follow-up, she mentioned the small discharge to her doctor, believing it was normal. The doctor prescribed antibiotics, but she never complained, maintaining her cheerful spirit.

Doctors later recommended a second hip replacement, thinking she might be allergic to the metal implant. Our family covered the costs. After the second surgery, she felt much better and could walk again. But a few weeks later, the wound began releasing small amounts of fluid again. This time, she felt no pain and thought it was normal.

For almost two years, she lived this way, feeling fine, walking, and enjoying life, but with a small wound that never fully healed. Even in Honduras, getting timely and proper medical care can be challenging. Despite these difficulties, she remained cheerful and never complained about her condition or the costs involved.

We are very fortunate the infection has not spread to her body. She has not felt sick during this time, and after her doctor's checkup in the United States, she is very healthy. The only issue is her hip, which now requires surgery to properly treat the infection and replace the implant.

What We Discovered in the United States

After arriving in the U.S. in September 2025, doctors discovered the infection was inside the metal implant. She now needs a third surgery to remove the infected implant, place a new one, and receive the correct antibiotics based on lab tests. Without this surgery, the infection could become life-threatening.

The Challenge

Because my grandmother is visiting on a tourist visa, she does not have health insurance. Travel or visitor medical insurance will not cover this pre-existing condition. The $37,000 total cost is for the surgery itself. Recovery costs will come later, but we urgently need to raise this money to have the surgery done as soon as possible. Our family is contributing what we can, but we are not in a position to pay for it all ourselves. Anything helps, and sharing this fundraiser with others can also make a huge difference.

How You Can Help

Any donation helps, and sharing this fundraiser can make a big difference. Your support will help my grandmother walk without pain and return home healthy.
