My grandmother Berta del Carmen Mora has always been the heart of her family, a woman whose life has been defined by devotion, sacrifice, and an unwavering spirit. At 86, she faces her greatest challenge yet: an emergency leg amputation due to complications from diabetes and severe arterial disease. Despite years of pain and limited resources in Venezuela, Berta has never lost her warmth or her sense of humor, always putting others before herself and caring for her children, grandchildren, and even the animals and plants she loves. Her faith and resilience have carried her through a difficult childhood as an orphan, a lifetime of service, and the loss of her beloved husband, but this new trial has left her and our family in urgent need.

Her granddaughter Milagros, daughter Yoneida and son Rodolfo are by her side in Venezuela, managing her care and searching for resources, while my father, her son, supports from afar. The distance is agonizing, my dad hasn’t seen his mother in seven years, and his pending asylum case in the US means he cannot travel without risking our family’s future. The stress and fear of separation weigh heavily on us all, especially as we face the reality that time with Berta may be running short. We are devastated by the thought of losing her without the chance for a final reunion.

We are raising funds to cover Berta’s surgery, emergency travel expenses for my dad, and the ongoing care she will need: special equipment, physical therapy, nursing, and psychological support to help her adapt to this new chapter.
