My name is Travis, and my grandma’s name is Sandra. About a year ago, she was diagnosed with dementia, but over the past few months her condition has rapidly worsened. Every day has become more difficult than the last.

I am her power of attorney, and I’ve been doing everything I can to find her a long-term care facility where she can receive the support and dignity she deserves. Unfortunately, I’ve hit wall after wall. Many facilities have refused to accept her due to her behavior, including compulsive picking and scratching at her own skin, which they consider a liability.

The few places willing to take her in are asking for $5,000 or more upfront, which is far beyond what we can afford. Because of this, my grandma has been stuck in the hospital for weeks with no clear path forward and no facility willing to accept her.

I feel lost and overwhelmed, but I know one thing for certain: I want the best possible care for her. She deserves to be safe, comfortable, and treated with compassion.
