Help my friend Brian

At the age of 25 Brian Mosher was diagnosed with Juvenile Syndrome. Juvenile Polyp Syndrome is a disease that is extremely rare and refers to the size and maturity of the polyp and not the age in which a person is diagnosed.

Over the course of the last 20ish years Brian has been able to keep the polyps under control with routine upper and lower scopes and removal of the polyps until May of this year (2019). In mid May of this year Brian was at work and passed out and was taken to the local hospital and admitted for 3 days and then transferred to the University Of Iowa hospital and clinics, and was very anemic and had a multiple bleeding polyps and had to have them removed and was kept in the hospital till his blood count returned to a stable level, returned home and was put off work for an extra week.

On July 8 th Brian went in for a routine upper scope and all seemed well and he went home and back to work. On July 29 th Brian was back at work began throwing up blood and was taken by ambulance to the hospital again and stabilized and transferred back to the University of Iowa hospital and treated and since he had only thrown up once with the blood they stabilized him and sent him home.

On July 30 th Brian was at work again and passed out and was rushed to the hospital in Iowa City and admitted and had an upper scope was performed again and this time they found a large oozing bleeding polyp and it was not able to be removed and could only be temporarily cauterized.  He was referred to a surgeon and the surgeon said that the only way to treat this was to completely remove his stomach. Brian and his wife along with both of their families made the decision to seek a second opinion and they looked into the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Brian had his first appointment at the Mayo Clinic on August 13 th with a G.I. doctor and came up with a plan of attack. The plan was for Brian to return at the end of August for an upper scope and try to “map out” his stomach and take biopsies and see if the polyps could be controlled with just routine scopes. Unfortunately this was not the case.

On August 30 th Brian under went surgery to have his entire stomach and gallbladder removed. He did great with the surgery and came home on September 6 th and has been recovery for the last 7 weeks and has made remarkable strides with his recovery as far as his eating and regaining his strength.

Over the course of the last 3 months Brian has been off of work and his wife is only able to work 2 part time jobs which she has had to take a lot of time off of due to all the doctor appointments, recovering, and her taking care of two other family members. While Brian’s wife does work the 2 jobs, he is the main provider for his family which consists of himself, his wife and their 16 month old daughter. Over the course of the time Brian and his wife have been fighting with the short term disability company to get him approved for the claim and have been battling the health insurance company to pay for the medical expenses and cost of him to have the surgery. They have borrowed money and relied on family

members to assist them with trips to Minnesota and watching the baby while he has been in and out of the hospital and have now exhausted all of their resources as family members are currently unable to financially assist much more due to their own financial responsibilities and medical obligations.

Brian and his family are in danger of loosing their home, vehicles and having the power shut off at the house. Which would leave them homeless and without a way to get to and from work and appointments, and they would have to let their baby stay with someone else while they try and figure things out.

Any help is greatly appreciated during this tough time.
