My family and I have been facing nonstop challenges since an apartment fire turned our lives upside down in January 2025. We lost our home and have struggled to recover ever since. The fire forced us to move from College Station to Houston in hopes of finding better opportunities, but the road has been anything but easy. My partner has been laid off twice, and I am a student and home-maker still searching for work. Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to regain our financial footing.
Recently, a restoration and emergency packing company demanded a large payment from us with no option for installments, after already taking a significant amount from our insurance policy. We have tried to explain our situation, but they have not been understanding. Now, we are at risk of homelessness, facing possible utility disconnection, food scarcity, and struggling to provide basic supplies for our toddler. Our monthly expenses include rent, utilities, car insurance, and WiFi. We are also running out of money for gas and food, making it even harder to get by day to day. On top of this, we have been denied government assistance multiple times, do not have SNAP benefits, and our Medicaid is at risk due to employment and address changes. The process for 2-1-1 and other support has been long and unsuccessful, leaving us with nowhere else to turn.
